A Night of One Act Operas: Menotti’s: The Telephone and Toscano’s: The Interview.
“The Telephone” is a heartwarming 20-minute comedy about a young couple. HE- wants to propose, SHE - just got a new telephone, which she won’t stop using. It will have you laugh, cry and remember fondly similar events in your own life!
“Made In America, Episode 1” deals with the ongoing Middle East conflict. Two women: Anat, a Jewish woman living in West Jerusalem, and Alzubra, a Muslim woman converted from a Presbyterian Maryland upbringing and now living in East Jerusalem, meet and share a dual tragedy. As their friendship grows they decide to create an organization called, Mu-Je-Lif, Muslim and Jewish Women for Life. Concerned, but, not overly so, the U.S. Dept. of Defense sends a journalist, to hear their story. What follows, The Interview, transforms all three of them. DISCUSSION : As part of the performance there will be an audience discussion, question-and-answer period with the cast, pianist and conductor.
Both operas will be performed in English, and because both are short, these could be a perfect introduction to opera for those who have shied away from that musical form.
